Subtle distinctions: Graham Hadlow's new paintings Many painters have the ability to make it clear that their scene is sunlit, some are successful in showing convincing reflections in water — but not many are able to represent the subtleties of fading light though, or the distinction between winter light and dawn, the effect of sea mist coming inland or a spring breeze ruffling water. Artist Graham Hadlow has made these variations of time and weather and season on a familiar landscape his ‘specialist subject.' He recognises cloud formations and densities, the differences of sea water at full tide or at the ebb, how snow looks after a light fall or in thawing conditions. He registers the seasonal variation of colour of vegetation and the nuanced differences in the reflections on wet mud, ice or water. He knows every building in Tenby Harbour, the Parrog, the standing stones of the county, the castles, the mountains of Snowdonia, the beaches of Ceredigion. He has painted all of these, maybe many times, but doesn't tire of them for there is always a change: in the lichen on the rocks; distant walkers on the beach; autumn colour in the trees. A central subject may be the same but the paintings themselves see them anew. Graham Hadlow, known by many in Pembrokeshire as their teacher at Greenhill (or as a colleague, football player, fisherman, champion fly-tier...) is now known by adult learners as a helpful, skilful advisor in the art of watercolour. His use of materials and techniques are freely shared as he demonstrates and explains his methods in classes and workshops across South Wales. He has an exhibition of 50 new paintings at The White Lion Street Gallery in Tenby, from 30th November 2013 until 4th January 2014. His subjects - towns, cottages, castles and harbours, beaches and estuaries, Snowdonian mountains and valleys — are all original framed watercolours and include several large works. Graham will be in the gallery from 2 — 4pm on Saturday 30th November and be pleased to meet and chat with anyone who wishes to view the exhibition. The gallery, next door to the former cinema in Tenby, opposite the town walls, is open from 10am to 5pm every day except for Wednesdays and Sundays. The whole exhibition may be seen on the website: www.artmatters.org.uk and for further information telephone: 01834-843375.
