From the 5th of August to the 26th of November, come and explore our new temporary exhibition, ‘Fabrications‘ by Becky Brewis.
About
‘Fabrications’ is about acts of making and making things up. Often taking a childhood photo as a starting point, Becky Brewis makes large, mixed-media jute embroideries which explore the outer edges of memory – where fact becomes fantasy, and the personal becomes mythic.
Jute is tough and hard-wearing but also yielding and easily frayed at the edges, making it an expressive medium for exploring memory, physicality and the passage of time. The works are presented in the context of the social history galleries at Verdant Works, where human stories are told through the lens of the jute-making process.
About Artist
Becky Brewis is an artist from London who is now based in Dundee. Her work explores personal memories, material culture, and how a sense of self is mediated by the technologies of the times we live in. In 2021 she won the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation Bursary and the Degree Show Purchase Prize at Edinburgh College of Art, where she completed an MFA in Contemporary Art Practice. She previously studied in the Royal Drawing School’s funded postgraduate programme (2015-16).
In 2018-19 Becky was an artist in residence at the Centre for Philosophy and Visual Arts at King’s College London. She was selected by Tina Keane for Visions in the Nunnery 2018 and was shortlisted for the 2017 Jerwood Drawing Prize. She has been awarded residencies in Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, at Hackney’s Space Studios and in Scotland at Dumfries House, Embassy Gallery, and Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. She received VACMA awards in 2022 and 2023 to continue working with ceramics at Dundee Ceramics Centre.
