About
For her exhibition at White Conduit Projects, Painting 'Off the Rails (Japan)’, 2019, fills the upstairs gallery, a counterpart to the more contemplative display of paintings based on Japanese imagery downstairs. Milroy has created a series of textile/collage paintings using antique Japanese fabric. These paintings embody Milroy’s characteristic enjoyment in the formal interplay between pattern, colour and surface -- a means for Milroy to explore her interest in and taste for Japanese aesthetics – and her long-standing connection to Japan through the lens of still life. The lively combination of fabric pieces and painted surfaces trigger intimate memories of clothing and textiles, and animate the sense of touch and of ‘making’ and ‘looking’ for the viewer. Underneath the surfaces of these inventive, affectionate canvases, in which percolates Milroy’s attachment to Japan, lies an innovative contemporary plot.
