Evolution - the light from inside

“A painting must have unity of form and light.” said Hoffman. “It must light up from the inside through the instrinsic qualities which colour relations offer. When it lights up from the inside, the painted surface breathes, because the interval relations which dominate the whole, cause it to oscillate and to vibrate.”

You can see this oscillation, this vibration in Browning's work, in the fizz of energy which emanates from the edges of his planes of colour.
