CANAL is delighted to present a solo exhibition by Polish visual and performance artist Justyna Scheuring who lives and works in London.
In Everyone, Merry-Go-Round, Scheuring brings together sign language interpreters and consecutive translators, in order to compose a performance through a multitude of voices and forms of expression to question issues of identity in a context of personal trauma, global migration and the experience of otherness.
Scheuring's practice often combines performance, installation and drawing. Performative events which she has directed challenge preconceptions of participation in social events, whilst the performances where she uses her own presence play with activating new relationship between objects, body, environment, gesture and words. Everyone, Merry-Go-Round combines performance and art installation which functions as a stage design.
Scheuring offers an ambitious show, realised with suppport from the Arts Council and the Polish Cultural Institute in London. It is partly inspired by a collaboration with Bepartofithub.org, a voluntary organisation for reducing social exclusion for Deaf and disabled people, as well as by the artist's personal experience as a Pole living in the UK. She is a graduate of the University of Arts, Poznan, and Goldsmiths College, London (MA in Performance Making 2010). Her recent presentations include Arts and Humanities Festival, Kings College London, SPILL Festival of Performance, and SWAB International Contemporary Art Fair Barcelona. Scheuring has participated in numerous exhibitions and performance events in the UK and abroad.
"When I create a performance I see it as a sculpture communed by a space, the objects and people; and composed like a music piece or a poem – with respect to the time and rhythm."
The private view on Thursday 2 February will feature the performance Interval at 7.30pm. Interval features Agnieszka Podubny and Robin Paley Yorke, and is directed by Justyna Scheuring.
