EVAN GRUZIS
*Alpha Wave*
Opening: Friday, March 09, 2012. 19-21.30
March 09 - April 20, 2012
DUVE Berlin is pleased to present Alpha Wave, the third solo exhibition of new works on paper and video by Brooklyn based artist Evan Gruzis.
When the eyes are closed, before reaching somnolence, the brain experiences some of its strongest signals Alpha Waves. In this exhibition, Evan Gruzis focuses on the the conflation of this physio-meditative state and the subliminal aesthetic that it achieves. The oscillation between full awareness and unconsciousness is the point of departure for Gruzis' Alpha Wave.
Gruzis develops his limited palate that derives from the spectrum of after images and retinal static. This group of work contains no earth tones and appears based in the synthetic, but is inspired by the reds, blues and aquas that occur during oculo-palpebral movement. Gruzis's watercolors, some his largest to date, focus on rhythmic stripe patterns and numerous transparent washes, manipulating subtle chromatic shifts to achieve what he calls harmonics" of color. The depth of Gruzis's trademark pastoral washes are flattened to that of an eyelid -- emphasizing abstraction within his oeuvre.
