This 2-day workshop will introduce you to some of the fundamental elements of the process. You’ll learn how to create fine definitive lines or soft textural marks using hard and soft grounds, how to achieve tone using aquatint and how to print your plates using an etching press.
About
Etching is a traditional printmaking process in which a line or mark is bitten into the surface of a metal plate using a mordant (acid). The technique dates back to the sixteenth century and since then has been widely developed to express a range of both gestural and controlled marks. This 2-day etching workshop will introduce you to some of the fundamental elements of the process and equip you with the necessary skills to begin exploring the technique within your own practice.
Day one will focus on hard and soft grounds, experimenting with creating either fine, definitive lines or soft, textural marks. Day 2 covers adding varying tones through aquatints. The studio is a low toxicity environment. Suitable for beginners and those with some experience who may need a refresher. Places are limited to 6.
The course will cover:
• Plate preparation; filing edges, degreasing, polishing, applying ground
• Soft and hard ground etching (line and/or textural marks)
• Tone etching with aquatint
• Paper preparation and registration for printing
• Safe use of oil based inks
• Safe use of an etching press
• Finishing your prints and signing an edition
What to Bring:
