The Gerald Moore Gallery is pleased to present Essential Structures, our annual open call exhibition, this year’s artworks are inspired by the broader interpretations of Minimalism.

Essential Structures runs from 6th - 27th July 2024 with the private view on Saturday 6th July 1 – 4pm. During the private view, there will be musical performances inspired by Minimalism by Eltham College music students from 1.30 – 3.30pm.

With artworks devoid of pictorial and decorative content and stripped of external references, Minimalism was one of the most important and influential movements of the late Modernist era of the 1960s and early 70s. Its features included an emphasis on pure abstract form, specific materials, and precise, clean presentation. Its impact can still be seen, not just in the artworld, but also in design, architecture, literature, and music.

The exhibition Essential Structure aims to survey the spirit of Minimalism in the work of artists today and examine how its principals continue to inspire creativity in a variety of media.

A call out for artworks was announced at the beginning of April to artists working in London and the South East. The artworks in the exhibition were selected by a panel of 20 young people aged 11-18 from Eltham College who chose 27 artworks, according to whether the artworks moved them and whether they felt a relation to the themes of Minimalism.

Artists include:

Phil Ashcroft, Trevor Attwood, Fay Ballard, Ellie Briffitt, Sarah Crossfield, Anna Fairchild, Samuel Harriman, R James Healy, IVAAIU City, Jay Ho, Tomoko Hokyo, Sangwon Jo, Rachel Karasik, Minhee Kim, Nicolaas Victor van de Lande, Deborah Lerner, Enzo Marra, Nigel O’Neill, Camila Quintero, Thayada Shamsudheen, Maya Pearl Böröcz Silverberg, Maayan Sophia Weisstub, Nikolas Wereszczyński, Li Yu and Alice Zakharenko.
