Smithson Gallery presents The End of Matter, a solo show by Plymouth based artist Eric Haacht
About
In the heart of Soho, twenty-three original paintings by Eric Haacht (b.1983) will grace the walls of 68 Old Compton Street carefully curated by Smithson. Like diary entries, the paintings were created by Haacht on a daily basis during 2022, their energy and essence synchronising with his circadian rhythms, as well as the ocean that ebbs and flows outside of his studio window. Ambiguous (self) portraits dissolve into pools of vivid colour, stretched and warped by the metaphysical forces of space and time. All artworks will be available to purchase during the exhibition.
About the Artist
Eric Haacht is a self-taught artist hailing from the Southwest of England. His expressive paintings fall into the realm of portraiture yet remain ambiguous, features only emerging unintentionally through his swirling brush strokes and enfolding vivid colours. The figures are not literal self-portraits, but for Eric, something of the self emanates through them as he paints quickly and subconsciously. He describes his works as like diary entries, a repetitive, daily process through which he captures certain moods or emotions. Francis Bacon is of great influence to the artist, and like Bacon, his paintings play in the uncanny space between the familiar and the unrecognisable. Haacht has exhibited in group shows internationally, and presented solo shows in Bristol (That Art Gallery, 2020) and Eindhoven (Cova Gallery, 2019). He has been represented by Smithson Gallery since 2020.
