About

Dr Stanislav Shmelev is an ecological economist, a photographer, a lecturer and a consultant, his new book, "Ecological Economics: Sustainability in Practice" is published by Springer in 2011. He held Visiting Professorships at the University of Geneva, University of Paris and University of Versailles, was a Senior Researcher at the Environmental Change Institute of Oxford University and worked with international organizations, IUCN, UNEP, UNDP, OECD in the field of sustainable development. Member of St Ives Arts Club and a former student of the Arts Club at the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Stanislav is inspired by the masters of European painting of the turn of the century and draws inspiration from nature and his scientific work. The exhibition of sustainability photography "Environmental Improvisations" to be held at the Said Business School of Oxford University will be devoted to the poetry of the world's nature reserves and the beauty of European cities. It will be accompanied by a series of jazz improvisations by the British jazz pianist Alex Steele, focused on each of the twelve works representing various musical keys. The exhibition will include three major series of works created between 2002 and 2012: "Nature Reserves of the World", "Sustainable Cities" and "Hommage a" (inspired by the works of the nineteen century painters Camille Pissarro, Paul Signac, Claude Monet, and Vincent van Gogh) emphasizing a poetic element of natural and architectural beauty. All works are printed in a fashionable technique of aluminium plates under acrylic glass, which gives them a certain 3D effect. Stanislav exhibited internationally, took part in the Oxfordshire Artweeks Festival of 2008 and 2010, exhibited with the St Ives Arts Club in 2010 and 2011, collaborates with GETTY, ALAMY, and WhiteWall and won Premier Selection in the PHOTO magazine (France). The artist's latest solo show in Oxford in May-August 2011 has been very positively reviewed in the Oxford Times.
