In the exhibition Ensuite, critically acclaimed London based artist Catherine Anyango looks at domestic environments being disturbed by emotional, intangible phenomena. The typical âsanctuaries' of the bathroom and the bedroom become disquieting and unstable spaces within Anyango's drawings.
The tile drawings, in graphite, ink and enamel paint, are abstract yet representative of bathrooms and washing. Building up the images square by square echoes the labour of tiling an actual space, while also creating beauty from the repetition of a simple object.
In her Black Bed/White Bed graphite drawings, Anyango explores the subjectivity of objects. The drawings reflect the inability to determine where the consciousness lies within us depending on how we change position, we see something quite different
