Join us for Turf’s reading group discussing unexpected and unusual texts inspired by our current exhibition.
The book to accompany exhibition Frivolous Convulsions will be Jean Genet’s “The Thief’s Journal”, partnered with Federico Garcia Lorca's "Theory and Function of the Duende".
The ‘Duende’ is characterised by irrationality, earthiness, a heightened awareness of death, and a dash of the diabolical. It’s the physical/emotional response to art – giving you chills or making you smile or cry as a bodily reaction to a particularly expressive artistic performance. Click here to read a PDF version of the essay or feel free to visit Turf to read in the workspace!
“The Thief’s Journal” is a novel which is part fiction and part autobiography. The novel is structured around a series of homosexual love affairs and male prostitution between the author anti-hero and various criminals, con artists, pimps, and a detective.
It’s free to join us and take part in the discussions! Free refreshments will also be available.
