Orphaned at birth in Venezuela, the artist was brought up in an orphanage in Spain. The orphanage ran a circus which trained the children in circus skills. As a young man Jose toured the world with 'Los Muchachos'. An experience that he loved very much. "It was very connected to the world on my own."
His work is colourful, playful and balanced.
This exhibition brings together works, though not exclusively, that have never been exhibited together before 'Sur America', 'Meditteranea' and 'Memories'. Not wanting a retrospective, Jose has installed the pieces to collage them in a kaleidoscope of connectivity. The three central pieces are 'Life Story', a brown paper stream of consciousness scroll that falls from the wall 8' up and is work in progress. 'Reflective Selfie' a 1m x 1m wall mounted piece of mirrored metal onto which is written 'Memories' over and over again. The metal is scratched and the writing is occasionally smudged. It is reflective. And 'Memory 1' a large 1m diameter collage of concentric cardboard circles projecting from the wall , diminishing towards the viewer or expanding toward the wall, however you choose to view it.
