Empty Things and Open Spaces : new work by Olivia Bullock and Lisa Jones at the WIA Gallery in Lewes, East Sussex.

About

This hotly anticipated joint show from Olivia Bullock and Lisa Jones opens on Saturday 27 May.

Olivia Bullock's unsettling 'Hedge series' explores the forces of nature, and human intervention, providing an anecdotal landscape that is both familiar but hypnagogic, pastoral yet threatening. Her work is constructed from layers of hand painted paper, creating subtle depth and texture, which is then overpainted with intricate, almost obsessive detail.

Consistent themes in her work are history, folklore and subculture, which provide a narrative that is embedded in an arcane and esoteric domain

Ceramic artist Lisa Jones  specialisies in hand-built, small scale and often highly-coloured sculptures. Her abstracted work is informed by an almost museological focus on the display of objects, the excavation of the multifarious stories they suggest, mixed with her own personal memories.

Unlike the formally audacious and innovative glazing of Lisa's signature works, the pieces for Empty Things and Open Spaces still huddle in familiar, interrelated groupings, but take on the more humble and quotidian form of jars, bottles and pots in raw, unglazed or self-coloured materials.

Opening hours 12-5pm Wed to Sat to 1 July.
