About

Emotional Territories
Duo Solo Exhibition by Sara Chaar & Ramzi Mallat
21 November 2024 - 11 January 2025

In celebration of Marie Jose Gallery's third anniversary, the exhibition titled Emotional Territories brings together the evocative works of Sara Chaar and Ramzi Mallat, where both artists weave rich tapestries of personal and cultural narratives.

Sara Chaar, who opened the gallery’s doors as the inaugural artist, presents a collection of abstract paintings that invite the viewer into an introspective realm. Through her vibrant palette, she explores
the complex interplay between memory and experience, creating landscapes that echo both individual recollections and collective histories. Her works serve as portals, encouraging onlookers
to delve into the emotional resonance of their own pasts - a profound reminder of the places and feelings that define our sense of home.

Complementing this introspective journey, Ramzi Mallat’s thought-provoking series draws inspiration from ancient figurines discovered within the "Eye Temple Complex" of Tell Brak in Syria.
These votive artifacts, which the artist perceives as primitive representations of the evil eye belief, are reimagined as contemporary talismans anchored in an uncertain world. Resonating with themes
of loss, protection, and cultural identity, the works question the commodification of heritage in a globalized economy. Mallat's series also serves as a poignant commentary on the urgency of repatriating looted artifacts to combat collective amnesia and cultural erasure.

Together, Chaar and Mallat create a dialogue that intertwines memory, identity, and the enduring journey of belonging, inviting viewers to reflect on the emotional landscapes that shape our shared human experience.
