The first solo exhibition from contemporary artist Bex Ilsley

Bex Ilsley is a contemporary artist best known for creating colourful images of her body and performance art as well as her use of social media, particularly Instagram. Some of her followers include Miley Cyrus and The Flaming Lips and her works are held in private collections in the UK, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the USA, Canada, Brazil, Japan, Singapore and Australia. Recent accolades for Ilsley’s work include finalist in the Woon Foundation Painting & Sculpture Prize (2016), honourable mention in the ArtSlant Prize (2016) and winner of the 2016 Warrington Contemporary Arts Festival Open Exhibition. Emotional Processing is Ilsley’s first solo exhibition and here she presents a new body of work which explores the performance of the self, particularly in the digital realm. Ilsley combines a variety of fabricated and appropriated objects, props and locations to construct surreal, sci-fi portraits and video works, primarily disseminated via social media and her website. Distributing images, particularly of women online, provokes questions around the ethics and intentions involved. Ilsley acknowledges this tension but ultimately enjoys the autonomy of creating her own self-image on these digital platforms, seeing the potential for them to be more or less honest, artificial or authentic; they may also travel further and live on longer than Ilsley herself. This show is dedicated to the artist’s grandparents, Colin and Geraldine Vincent, who have made production of the work possible.
