About
This winter we are proud to continue our commitment to 'Britain's greatest living stone carver' with an important solo exhibition at our Savile Row gallery. The exhibition consisting of 20 sculptures is accompanied by a major new essay by Dr Helen Metcalfe.
Willoughby Gerrish has worked with Emily Young for over 20 years, arranging multiple public exhibitions, museum projects and art fairs, as well as exhibiting a series of her monumental sculptures at Thirsk Hall Sculpture Garden in Yorkshire. The display and sale of her large scale works at Thirsk have been a key part of our growing business.
2024 has been a key year in Emily Young's career. The most comprehensive publication about the artist to date, written by the art historian Jon Wood and published by Lund Humphries following a series of interviews with the artist was published in June this year. The monograph titled Emily Young: Stone Carvings and Paintings explores her influences and gives an insight into her creative process; the book includes 120 illustrated works from her archive and will be available to purchase throughout the exhibition.
The exhibition falls in line with Young's sculpture titled Warrior Poet joining the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, which is on display in Room 21 in The Dorothy and Michael Hintze Galleries. The galleries include sculpture from the 4th century to the present day and include masterpieces by Michelangelo, Bernini and Rodin. The positioning of the sculpture, in conversation with a work by Rodin, is of personal significance to Young, as her grandmother, the sculptor Kathleen Scott worked directly with the artist.
We are also delighted to announce, after Young's collaboration with the European Cultural Centre at the 2024 Venice Biennale, she has been awarded the major honour of the Venice Biennale European Cultural Centre prize for 'Sculpture and Installation'.
