Emil's paintings are fresh, direct and unpretentious. His work, routed in the Realist tradition, centres on depictions of the prosaic and of everyday occurrences, evoking mystery and the suggestion of a wider narrative. He will contemplate these forgotten places or moments for a long period of time before committing them to paint and as such, his paintings have considerable meditative quality. The minimalist compositions, with their rejections of anything superfluous, only add to this effect. As an artist he is not afraid to challenge the perception of what a painting is - be it a representation of an object or an object in its own right.
