Transformation of the billboard to a street museum
About
NEW PUBLIC LOCATION
The Elsenbrücke bridge over the Spree at Treptower Park , An den Treptowers 1, 12435 Berlin
Out of the white cube
There have been constant criticisms that contemporary art is complicated, esoteric, and not accessible to the public. To see the art, one has to enter the clean white space of the gallery, which is normally devoted to a few selected artists. Since the pandemic began, traditional white wall exhibitions are showing their limitations more than ever. While we cannot predict how long the crisis will last, let us use this time as a catalyst for rethinking art's functions and how to present them.
Transformation of the billboard to a street museum
Marketing tries to shape our intellectual processes, beliefs, desires, and intentions. Digital and analogue tactics do this so thoroughly that advertisements seep into all aspects of our lives. But this wave of advertisements is not a new phenomenon, since the early 1900's billboards became a widely used advertising method and have subsequently filled the streets and lined the roads across the world.
What would happen if artists took over these billboards?
By presenting artworks on billboards, they could gain far greater exposure and reach a wider audience, including those who would not visit exhibitions or normally interact with artworks. The billboard, which is the commercial sector's plaything, can open up a new horizon that serves as a public good. It can offer a gateway of highly communicative practice, accessible to the broader public without them being forced into art spaces.
The photograph entitled IN THE BLINK OF PREJUDICE by Young-jun Tak examines and challenges (mis)belief and (mis)conception structured by our everyday politics, social norms, and gender issues. His works have been shown at the 11th Berlin Biennale in 2020 and the 15th Istanbul Biennial in 2017.
Won Seoung Won, who received M.F.A. in Media Art in 2005 from the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln is known for transforming her narratives into photographic landscapes. At first sight, Won Seoung Won's THE SEA OF JOURNALISTS could exist in the real world. But on a second look, an infinite number of different photographs that Won took reflect and unfold imaginary spaces, symbols, and dreams.
