About

Chalton is pleased to present  'States of Excitation' a solo show by Elliot Dodd on-site, off-site and online.

For “The States of Excitation Ellio Dodd will present a new site specific 4 channel video work inhabited by fictitious body parts in various states of vibration. Solely residing in the public realm of the street, the exhibition will communicate visually via 2 screens and aurally by physically setting in motion the gallery windows.  A 5th video element will form a consumer-coda, nestled inside the neighbouring Costcutter supermarket.

“The States of Excitation, comparable to toxic states, can be defined as the illogical and irresistible impulse to reject material or moral goods that it would have been possible to utilize rationally.”

Georges Bataille, The Notion of Expenditure, 1933.

For “The States of Excitation Elliot Dodd will develop a new 4 channel video work inhabited by fictitious body parts in various states of vibration. Solely residing in the public realm of the street, the exhibition will communicate visually via 2 screens and aurally by physically setting in motion the gallery windows.  A 5th video element will form a consumer-coda, nestled inside the neighbouring Costcutter supermarket.

The swirling, desirous economics of Bataille's Notion of Expenditure have always really resonated with Dodd’s mind, but something about the particular flavour of our current upside-down times drew him back to it.  He wants this new, very public work to stand as an unsettled fleshy emblem of our temporarily muted, rapacious nonsensical impulses.

“Market dislocations of this magnitude happen rarely, perhaps once or twice in a generation, and have historically provided excellent entry points for investors. History has shown us that supernormal returns can be made during this type of environment.”

5/4/2020, Mark Asquith, Somerset Capital Management

“Human life, distinct from juridical existence, existing as it does on a globe isolated in celestial space, from night to day and from one country to another- human life cannot in any way be limited to the closed systems assigned to it by reasonable conceptions.”

Georges Bataille, The Notion of Expenditure, 1933.
