Egon Zippel: The Devandalizer NYC/B

A natural born hunter and gatherer, Egon Zippel's work brings the raw and gritty surfaces of the outside world into the gallery space for his new exhibition, The Devandalizer NYC/B, at Fata Morgana Galerie from December 9th - 23rd, 2016. Comprised of stickers that are collected from the streets of various cities such as Detroit, Berlin, Las Vegas, Quebec, Montreal, Palermo, Catania, Naples, Rome, Florence, Milan, Havana, Addis Ababa and naturally New York, Zippel’s work re-contextualizes the skins of cities, conglomerating peeled layers to create new relationships between places and their objects. 

The identity of a city is comprised of the the marks made by its inhabitants. Graffiti and street art have evolved to become urban hieroglyphs and serve as a means to communicate, promote, and signify our presence in the world. Inherently relevant to the industrial quality of cities like Berlin, stickers are just as much a medium of the city as they are of Zippel’s work.

Zippel’s solo show at Fata Morgana Galerie, The Devandalizer NYC/B, includes several large scale panel pieces that are comprised of stickers from single cities as well as a combination of cities, creating maps and links between the places that he explores and their physical make-up. Included in the exhibition are works where Zippel takes the physicality of the stickers and translates them into a programmed non-repetitive animation, adding a technological layer to the treatment of his subject matter.

Zippel’s approach brings the physicality of the places into the conversation. His works do not strip the place of their identity, rather through creating visual threads he is able to preserve the essence of each city and have these places communicate with each other as well. The stickers contain a sense of history on their own, being plucked after weather and wear have sunk in, Zippel almost assumes the role of an archeologist, preserving the evidence of man’s ever present mark on the layers of the industrial world we have built. 

Egon Zippel was born in Timisoara, Rumania in 1960 to German parents. When Nicolae Ceaușescu rose to power in 1964, the Zippels presciently left for Mannheim/Heidelberg, Germany, to begin life anew.

Egon studied graphic design at the University of Mannheim whence he received a Fulbright Scholarship comprising an introductory month at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. and the academic year of 1984-85 at the University of Texas in Austin. Over the next few years Egon studied computer graphics at New York Institute of Technology and finished his postgraduate studies at the Institute for New Media at the Staedel Art Academy in Frankfurt from 1993-94.

During the early ‘90s he lived primarily in Italy until eventually settling again in NYC in 1996. Currently he maintains studios in New York and Berlin.

Egon Zippel ist ein geborener Jäger und Sammler. In seiner neuen Ausstellung The Devandalizer NYC/B vom 9. – 23. Dezember 2016 in der Fata Morgana Galerie bringt er die rohe und gleichzeitig vitale Oberfläche der urbanen Umwelt in das Galerieumfeld. Zippel verwendet Aufkleber und andere Bestandteile städtischer Kommunikation aus den Straßen verschiedener Städte wie Detroit, Berlin, Las Vegas, Quebec, Montreal, Palermo, Catania, Neapel, Rom, Florenz, Milano, Havanna, Addis Ababa und natürlich New York, um die „Haut“ dieser Städte in einen neuen Kontext zu setzen. Abgelöste Schichten schaffen neue Beziehungen zwischen Orten und ihren Objekten. 

Die Identität einer Stadt besteht aus den Spuren, die ihre Einwohner hinterlassen. Graffiti und Straßenkunst werden zu urbanen Hieroglyphen und dienen als Kommunikations- oder Werbemittel. Sie repräsentieren unser Dasein in der Welt. Sticker sind nicht nur inhärenter Bestandteil von Metroplen wie Berlin – sie dienen der Stadt genauso wie Zippels Arbeit als mediales Objekt.

Zippels Solo-Ausstellung The Devandalizer NYC/B in der Fata Morgana Galerie enthält mehrere große Paneele, die sich aus Stickern der einzelnen Städte oder aus einer Kombination von Städten zusammensetzen. So werden Landkarten und Verlinkungen zwischen den Orten und dem physischen Charakter der Orte geschaffen, die der Künstler erkundet. Auch wird eine sich nicht wiederholende Animation, der einige der bekanntesten Sticker zugrundeliegen, gezeigt werden.

Zippels Ansatz spricht die physische Ebene von Orten an. Seine Arbeit will den Orten nicht ihre Identität rauben, sondern mittels visueller Fäden die Essenz einzelner Städte herausfiltern und die Kommunikation zwischen den verschiedenen Orten ermöglichen. Mit ihren Verschleißmerkmalen stehen die Sticker für etwas Geschichtliches. Zippel nimmt somit quasi die Rolle eines Archäologen ein – indem er Manifestationen menschlicher Existenz aus der ihn umgebenden Welt aufgreift und diese in seiner Arbeit festhält.

Egon Zippel wurde 1960 als Sohn deutscher Eltern in Timisoara, Rumänien geboren. Als Nicolae Ceaușescu 1964 an die Macht kam, zogen die Zippels eiligst nach Mannheim/Heidelberg, um dort ein neues Leben zu beginnen.

Egon studierte Grafikdesign an der Universität Mannheim und erhielt 1983 ein Fulbright-Stipendium. Im Rahmen des Stipendiums verbrachte er einen Einführungsmonat an der Georgetown University in Washington D.C. und ein Studienjahr an der University of Texas in Austin (1984-85). 1985-86 studierte er Computer Graphics am New York Institute of Technology und arbeitete dort gleichzeitig in einem Designstudio. Er beendete sein Postgraduiertenstudium 1994 am Institut für neue Medien der Staatlichen Hochschule für Bildende Künste Frankfurt (Städelschule).

Während der frühen 90er Jahre lebte er größtenteils in Italien, bis er sich 1996 wieder in NYC niederließ. Derzeit hat er Studios in New York und Berlin.
