About

Sir Eduardo Paolozzi RA (1924 - 2005) was one of the most inventive and prolific of the British artists to come to prominence after the Second World War. During his lifetime he worked in an extensive variety of materials - producing sculpture, printmaking, drawing, textiles, ceramics, jewellery and eben the decoration of Tottenham Court Road Tube station. The artist's celebrated BUNK collages, unveiled at the inaugural meeting of the Independent Group in 1952, led him to be heralded as one of the founders of British pop art yet this new exhibition also explores Paolozzi's relationship to Surrealism and European Modernists such as Giacometti and Dubuffet, as well as his contribution to the worlds of fashion and mid-century design through his fabric designed for companies such as Horrockses and David Whitehead. Featuring around 150 works in a variety of media, the exhibition will explore the extraordinary versatility of Paolozzi's approach to making art and the central importance of collage as a working process within his career, not only in the traditional sense of paper collage, but also in terms of sculptural assemblage, printmaking and filmmaking.
