About
We are running a series of FREE to attend workshops through out the exhibition and NO BOOKING is available. Each session has a limited number of places which will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Please see the individual sessions for the details and what you need to bring with you.
Friday 19th April 11.30am to 1.30pm, Hand Embroidered Graffiti with Hayley Mills-Styles
Join embroidery artist Hayley Mills-Styles for a two-hour hand embroidery workshop inspired by graffiti and street art. Hayley will show you how to use thread and fabric scraps to create your own piece of stitched art. You will learn stitches like French knots, chain stitch and stem stitch to create your design. This workshop is suitable for beginners and people with some embroidery experience who would like to try something new. All materials and equipment will be provided and the workshop is suitable for people aged 12 and up.

Friday 19th April 2.30pm to 4.30pm, Fabric Manipulation with Maria Walker
Join artist Maria Walker where you will learn to make a textured cloth sampler using fabric manipulation techniques and hand stitch. Maria will guide you through using hand stitch to bring dimension to your fabric. This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience including beginners. Fabric and threads will be provided but you will need to bring along a basic sewing kit.

Saturday 20th April 11.30am to 1.30pm, Mini Weaving with Charlotte and Molly Foster
Join Charlotte and Molly and as they guide you through this weaving workshop. You will use a cardboard weaving loom to create your own piece of cloth from natural fibres and found items. All materials will be provided but you can also bring some fibres and materials along. The workshop is suitable for beginners and more experienced weavers ages 8 and up.

Saturday 20th April 2.30pm to 4.30pm, Fused Plastic with Nerissa Cargill Thompson
Join artist Nerissa Cargill Thompson and learn how to create new fabrics by fusing soft plastic packaging commonly found in your home. Your fabrics can then be used to make small artworks or accessories. This workshop is suitable for all skill levels and materials will be provided but you can also bring along any clean, soft plastics that you have at home. The workshop is suitable for ages 12+ as you will be using an iron.

Sunday 21st April 2.30pm to 4.30pm, Storytelling Through Stitch with Wolfgang Woerner
Join textile artist Wolfgang Woerner and get inspired by the works on display at the exhibition. Explore different hand stitch techniques to tell your own story a stitch at a time. All materials and equipment will be provided and the workshop is suitable for people of all skill levels ages 12 and up.

Tuesday 23rd April 11.30am to 1.30pm and 2.30pm to 4.30pm, Indigo Blues, a Shibori Taster with Ross Belton
Join textile artist Ross Belton and explore some simple shibori techniques; Kumo, Nui and Itajime. Wrap, stitch and fold cotton samples in preparation for dyeing in an indigo vat. This workshop is suitable for ages 12 and up and any skill level. All the materials and equipment will be provided but you will need to bring an apron and a plastic bag for your wet samples. You can also bring along a basic sewing kit of a needle, thread and scissors to help with the workshop.

Thursday 25th April 11.30am to 1.30pm, Transferring Designs to Cloth with Maria Walker
Join artist Maria Walker and learn about transferring images to cloth using hand stitch. In this workshop you will learn how to translate your images, sketches, or text into stitch on fabric using a variety of techniques and hand stitching. All materials will be provided but you will need to bring along some simple images or line-drawings you want to transfer to fabric. This workshop is suitable for all skill levels ages 12 and up.

Friday 26th April 11.30am to 1.30pm, Art from Found Objects with Maria Walker
Join artist Maria Walker and have a go at making some 3D sculptures using found objects. Take inspiration from the objects Maria uses in her work and create your own piece of art. Materials will be provided but you can bring your own objects to use or see what you can find in Mile End Park. This workshop is suitable for all skill levels ages 12 and up.
