'ECSTASY IN NORWICH' draws on ideas presented by the life and beliefs of the
celebrated female mystic Julian of Norwich.

About

‘ECSTASY IN NORWICH’ will take place in two stages. The first stage, for the first week,
opening Friday 7 December, will be a curated group exhibition of artists based in Norwich
and across the United Kingdom and Europe. These are:
Juliette Blightman
Benedict Drew
Kira Freije
INGRESS (Laura Bygrave, Nicky Deeley and Karis Upton)
Bea McMahon
Jeremy Millar
Erica Scourti
Tai Shani
Anna Townley.

This exhibition will explore the resonance of these ideas in contemporary life. How does
the alternative economy Julian existed within helps us think about alternative economies
for creativity? What is the place of ecstatic, devotional or revelatory experience today?
How are these recorded? How do we understand the gendered roles of rational versus
emotional experience?

Call for Work
The second stage, beginning in the second week, opening Saturday 15 December, will be
a presentation of open submission artworks responding to Julian’s sixteen ‘showings’
(visions), a list of which can be found below. Works submitted need not necessarily illustrate Julian’s showings, although they might do.

We welcome creative and original responses in all forms / media, from painting to poetry,
recipes to performances. However, the works submitted in this second stage should be no bigger than an adult cat – the sole company Julian kept in isolation – and no smaller than a hazelnut – the scale containing her vision of ‘all that is made’. All submitted works will join the work of the first stage in the gallery space at LOWER.GREEN.
Audio and video works should be sent via WeTransfer and will be shown on show reels.
Physical works should be posted to the following address by 11 December 2018 (this is
not the gallery address) along with the submission form (available on our website):
