(Echoes) is a collaborative art exhibition featuring artists Paul Goodwin, Y4SHK4 and Hanumantra. With the gallery painted black for the occasion, the artists will create a series of related artworks about the theme: past, present, future. Since they are especially interested in how these concepts relate, intertwine and co-depend, (Echoes) includes styles influenced by a number of historic and contemporary artistic practices as well as a range of ‘old’ and ‘new’ media. Each artist also creates tattoos, so the styles and practices they have developed for the medium will be very present throughout the exhibition.

Artwork on view:

Goodwin and Hanumantra will create a series of interlocking murals spanning several walls. The process will be open for public viewing. Juxtaposing the artists’ blackwork tattooing, they will create the murals in 'whitework,' the negative or reverse of their usual style. Painting will occur February 7th-10th and is open to the public.

Additionally, Goodwin and Hanumantra will use the gallery space to create tattoos inspired by their murals in a live demonstration on February 11th, beginning at 11:00 am.

With the murals complete, Y4SHK4 will lead a performance in the space, on view from February 12th. The performance will feature a presentation of shibari (縛), a poetic art form in which one participant ties and suspends the other with rope. During the presentation, Y4SHK4 will create tattoos in the negative spaces left by the rope, forging a permanent reminder of the transitory event.
