E.L.S.C. FILES is an exhibition and collaborative book project by photographer Julie Cook with the East London Stripper Collective, who define themselves as ethical strippers. The work is presented as a body of evidence of the social activism of these six women.
About
Doomed Gallery is proud to present the new body of work from Julie Cook, senior lecturer in Photography at the University of East London, whose previous work has already been presented in the group show "Paris Texas" together with Ed Ruscha and Robert Rauschenberg.
E.L.S.C Files is her new collaborative project together with the East London Strippers Collective, who define themselves as ethical strippers. Cook’s work tries to underline the social activism of the six women to juxtapose it with the language of photographic portraiture. Presented in the format of the police file the aim is it to challenge the historically conservative stigma and stereotypes that have characterized the public perception of the stripper industry.
