James Mackinnon's current exhibition shows a series of urban paintings based on the local area. His atmospheric canal and tower block scenes have been worked up from 'plein air' studies which are included in the show. The images are realistic yet slightly dream like in their stillness. This quality seems to evolve instinctively during the painting process. James Mackinnon blends the meticulousness of the Dutch Old Masters with the exactness of contemporary hard-edged urban realism.His carefully observed and subtly coloured studies are peculiarly compelling".
