About
Artists Anonymous will inaugurate their new showroom in Vyner Street and their emigration from Berlin to London with the world Premier of the Fourth from their series of Apocalyptic Antiheros, "Drugs". The painting and it's photographic "Afterimage"" Hunger" bought by the Saatchi Collection in 2006, was the first in an ongoing mythological fable. The Exhibition "War" Goff & Rosenthal New York, 2006 created:
"A kind of funhouse labyrinth, a disorientating and utterly engaging multi-sensory assault that utilised painting, photography, sculpture, video, carpentry, performance and audience participationâ¦utterly intoxicating."
Daniel Kunitz,Art Review August 2006
Most recently their painting and room based installation "Pollution and Overpopulation" Goff and Rosenthal, Berlin, was tip of the day in "der Tagesspiegel" Newspaper. Again they transformed the gallery into an alladin's cave cartoon fantasy where the boundries between media were no longer visible
playing with the gallery's previous history as a Vietnamese gift shop and it's reoccupation by the American gallery.
The new show in London, once again responds directly to its surroundings, right in the epicentre of the art gangland. With echoes of the seven deadly sins,"Drugs" is a kalaediscopic journey into a parallel universe, the dislocation of the viewer from his perception is so complete that even the paintings protagonist has stepped out of the picture and has joined the viewer in the room. The groups Rock & Roll parallels are orchestrated in a separate specially built soundproof room where a bizzare band of "figurative" paintings with limbs are jamming away deafeningly. Someone has thrown a guitar into one of the photographs and the archetypally anarchistic recording session metamorphosizes quite literally into comic book proportions. Returning to the first room, the initially sober gallery impression is broken as soon as one is drawn into the exhibitions central painting. This is no morality tale, this is the realisation of every narcotic dream simultaneously. Mainlining imagery, media and fantasy all at once, ones eyes stray from the painting to it's parralel "Afterimage in search of an anchor. However just like it's solar equivelent this afterimage seems to be the effect of having been blinded by light. Actually a negative photograph of the painting, it's as if the paintings soul has been captured through some form of ethereal process. The subject itself can only be described as like stumbling into a fairground hall of mirrors and discovering the heroic clown come circus master being fellated his gorgeous assistant seemingly nourishing her voluptuousness in the act. Like the dragon that emerges from behind her, her appetite appears insatiable.
Artists Anonymous are celebrating the New Year in style, continuing on last years International success, Forthcoming Institutional shows are already planned at the Sander Collection, Berlin April 2007, The Saatchi Collection, London, in conjunction with the New National Gallery in Berlin 2008 and beyond.
