JULY POP UP SEASON 2024
Sandy Layton & Andréa Lobel with collaborator Tania Salha
ArtCan X ArtBorgo Prize
About
This pop-up exhibition brings together the evocative abstract sculptures of Sandy Layton and the captivating photographic images of Andréa Lobel. It takes its inspiration from Italo Calvino’s observation that “Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else.”
Sandy is a London-based sculptor working in ceramic and wood whose sculptures express a narrative that is both familiar and elusive, while Andréa is a photographer from the Netherlands whose photographs capture moments of personal emotional significance. Both artists aim in their work to explore feelings from their personal backgrounds that cannot be captured in words.
They are delighted to be joined by acclaimed interdisciplinary artist Tania Salha, who contributes two mesmerising videos that provide a dynamic counterpart to their work.
Sandy and Andréa were selected for this pop-up exhibition by BPS director Andrew Etherington who curates with Rita Carta Manias from the artist-led organisation Artcan. The artists are grateful to the BPS and Artcan for sponsoring this show.
