Over the years a fascination with travel and the concept of the journey have fed into and enriched the work of mixed media artist Jean Davey Winter. In 2017 she visited the island of Cuba, an experience which became the starting point for the work in this exhibition.
About
Conjuring up words like poetic and magical, there is something seductive about Cuba. It draws you in, the constant awareness of vibrancy, colour and energy combining and conflicting with reminders of a much darker past, an environment at once alien and yet fascinating. Here the faded splendour of colonial domination co-exists alongside evidence of more recent political and revolutionary events.
These are memories, impressions: glimpses through entrances, grilles, screens; the suggestion of a passage or maybe a flight of stairs; the colours and textures of crumbling walls. Nothing is specific or defined in the hope that sufficient space remains for the viewer to bring their own interpretation to the work, whether or not they have visited Cuba themselves.
The title of the exhibition is taken from the book of the same name by Cristina Garcia.
