drawings David Harker Westbourne Grove Church ArtSpace Westbourne Grove (corner of Ledbury Road), London W11 2RW www.westbournegrovechurchartspace.org 15 January — 25 February 2009 Private View 15 January 2009 6-9pm In this exhibition at the Westbourne Grove Church ArtSpace artist David Harker will draw directly onto the gallery wall. These wall drawings form part of an exhibition which, through drawing, assesses our experience of landscape. The wall drawings and also work on panel and paper are characterised by an emphasis on shape and texture while retaining a sense of space and depth. The shapes are defined by their own boundaries. This moves them away from more pictorial and traditional depictions of landscape and the drawings take on a more abstract and otherworldly quality. Each drawing functions both as a self contained image with its own sense of mass and depth, whilst simultaneously appearing as a floating textural fragment revealing a concurrent sense of disjointedness and coherence. In 2007 he was awarded an Oppenheim — John Downes Memorial Grant and prior to that a Pollock Krasner Grant. He was shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize in 2004 and from 2001 — 2002 was a resident artist at the Florence Trust Studios in London. As well as exhibiting across the U.K., he has been in group shows in New York and Victoria, Australia. In 2001 he received a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from the University of Hertfordshire.
