An exhibition of colourful illustrations by Lucy Payne, showcasing the Project Ability studios and the artists at work.

About

Drawing People Drawing is a colourful exhibition documenting the studios of Project Ability, and the artists that make the studio environment come to life. Project Ability commissioned Lucy Payne after seeing her degree show work for the Glasgow School of Art. Her illustrative style is all her own and we will treasure these illustrations as a character study of Project Ability. She has captured the creativity and life that makes up the workshops here on the 3rd floor of Trongate 103, and we are proud to present to the public this exquisite body of work.

“I am a recent graduate from the Glasgow School of Art where I studied Illustration. During my time at university I also volunteered at Project Ability. Within drawing my interest lies in observing and recording from life. I find drawing a portrait a unique way to get to know and understand a person. It can evoke conversation and the artist is welcomed into the personal space of the sitter.

My time working at Project Ability has been spread out across 4 months, therefore providing much time to get to know many of the individuals that create work in the studios. With such a busy and vibrant atmosphere I felt instantly welcome and found the process of drawing people a very sociable experience.

Drawing People Drawing is a selection of 10 studies depicting the people who use the studios at Project Ability. These illustrations developed into an honest and intimate portrait of artists absorbed within the act of making. They also depict the studios themselves, highlighting the many ways in which the spaces are used and the potential for creativity that they hold.”

The drawings are also part of a publication which saw several of our artists working with Joanna Peace and Anthony Autumn to create text to accompany the drawings in a printed publication. This publication is for sale in our gallery shop and online. The writing workshops, led by Joanna and Anthony, provided an opportunity for the artists at Project Ability to share their thoughts about the studios and the creative environment they help to create here.
