Drawing Nature Workshop with Paul Bartlett RBSA

Spend the day drawing in the studio from nature with guidance from an expert tutor. In addition to what Paul brings in, students are encouraged to bring in pieces of nature that they find visually interesting and would like to explore via drawing.

Morning activity

  • Combined introduction and overview of options for the day via examples of the tutor’s own art work
  • Line and tone using graphite pencils including methods from controlled gradation and lifting out. Subjects will be nature without much colour such as dried leaves, shells, bones, stones, twigs, etc.

Afternoon activity

  • Use colouring or water-soluble pencils to pay homage to colours in nature. Paul will show examples of his flower subjects drawn from closeup nature and discuss his working methods, then assist students individually.
  • Subject options include flowers or other plant cuttings, potted plants, and fruit and vegetables.
