Drawing Nature Workshop with Paul Bartlett RBSA.
Spend the day drawing in the studio from nature with guidance from an expert tutor. In addition to what Paul brings in, students are encouraged to bring in pieces of nature that they find visually interesting and would like to explore via drawing.

About

Age group and abilities to be taught        

  • 18 years and above.
  • Suitable for all abilities

Course aims and skills/knowledge to be taught

  • Produce drawings working from nature.
  • Learn (mainly) dry drawing media for line, tone and colour.

Course outline for Drawing Nature Workshop

Morning activity

  • Combined introduction and overview of options for the day via examples of the tutor’s own art work
  • Line and tone using graphite pencils including methods from controlled gradation and lifting out. Subjects will be nature without much colour such as dried leaves, shells, bones, stones, twigs, etc.

Afternoon activity

  • Use colouring or water-soluble pencils to pay homage to colours in nature. Paul will show examples of his flower subjects drawn from closeup nature and discuss his working methods, then assist students individually.
  • Subject options include flowers or other plant cuttings, potted plants, and fruit and vegetables.

Materials and equipment required by participant

  • A folder to take your work home in
  • A selection of drawing materials including graphite pencils, colouring/water-soluble pencils, plastic and putty erasers
  • Your choice of a little bit of nature

(These will be provided for use during the workshop and are included in the fee)

  • A2 sheets of cartridge paper
