About
The National Academy of Design is pleased to present Drawing as Practice, a group exhibition centering on drawing as both the medium and practice connecting the many points of interests underpinning the National Academy of Design’s past, present and future. Placing emphasis on technique, representation, and abstraction, Drawing as Practice illustrates how drawing is a through-line in the National Academy’s history, connecting the diverse practices of the hundreds of active and former National Academicians, more than a dozen of whom are shown in the exhibition of over 70 artists and architects.
The first activation of the National Academy’s new office and exhibition space in Chelsea, the exhibition also includes work by numerous practitioners from outside the Academy’s membership, whose practices stretch the well-worn definitions of drawing and its inherent qualities. Represented artists and architects include Cecily Brown, Paul Cadmus, Mel Chin, Charles Gaines, Frank Gehry, Charles Gwathmey, Edgar Heap of Birds, Samuel Isham. Jasper Johns, Alex Katz, Christine Sun Kim, Sol LeWitt, Ana Mendieta, Howardena Pindell, Shellyne Rodriguez and Kiki Smith.
A public opening reception will be hosted Thursday, September 14 from 6:00-8:00 pm.
The exhibition will run through December 16, 2023 at 519 West 26th Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY.
