The second exhibition at CASSIUS&Co., Dorothea Stiegemann: Eden, will open on 4th September. It is really an exhibition about the impossibility of Eden, and will include paintings and works on paper. This is the artist's first solo presentation outside Germany.

About

CASSIUS&Co. is delighted to announce its second exhibition, Dorothea Stiegemann: Eden. The exhibition will open at 63 Kinnerton Street, London, on 4th September 2021, with private appointments available through August, and will run until 20th November, 2021. Eden will be Dorothea Stiegemann’s first solo presentation outside of Germany.

For Eden, Stiegemann presents a body of work that is not at all religious, at least, not in the Christian sense, but that does have at its heart a sense of longing for a state that can not be reached, for an innocence that comes before or after the complexities of man.

It is an exhibition of images made with oil and watercolour on linen, canvas and paper, some with figures and some without. They are images that are absolved of duty, that do not have any stories to tell or moralities to teach, and which have been led by the compulsion of the artist and the nature of their materials. Nonetheless, together and alone they each betray a certain pining, a grasping for something lost. And because what they are longing for can not be reached, not in this world anyway, they are also documentaries of their own defeat, of their inability to hold on to something that can not be held.

An exhibition catalogue including an essay by CASSIUS&Co. Director Fraser Brough will be published alongside the exhibition.

Dorothea Stiegemann was born in 1983 in Gießen, Germany. She graduated from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where she studied under Jörg Immendorff and as a Master's student of Peter Doig. Her work has been presented in group exhibitions at galleries across Germany as well as in London, Florence and Nagoya. She lives and works in Berlin.
