White Cube Bermondsey will present a solo exhibition by Colombian artist Doris Salcedo, focusing on her installation 'Palimpsest', recently shown at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid.
About
This work recognises the names of individuals who have drowned in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic while attempting to migrate to a better life.
Central to Doris Salcedo’s solo exhibition is her monumental installation ‘Palimpsest’ which was recently shown at the Palacio de Cristal in Madrid. The work remembers those who have died in Europe’s ongoing migrant crisis and consists of a floor of rectangular stone slabs, spanning the entire South Gallery at Bermondsey, on which the names of hundreds of victims intermittently appear.
⠀⠀
In addition, Salcedo’s ‘Tabula Rasa’ sculptures deal with the theme of sexual violence, featuring wooden tables which have been subjected to a complex and brutal cycle of destruction and reconstruction.
