'Don't Erase My Rest' - A exhibition showcasing and highlighting Black Women at rest and play.
About
'Don't Erase My Rest' was inspired by my time working with Voices That Shake and other grassroots community organisations, that are platforms for marginalised people of colour.
Their creation of a system that holds rest, creativity and meditation as pillars of championing social change,
made me question why we never see Black Women, in particular, at rest, or at peace in mainstream media?
This series explores Black Womanhood and restoration in a number of different forms.
I'm Deborah Ajia (AKA Illiyon), a London-Born artist that has been creating art for the last 20 years. Integrating digital pieces and traditional methods, my work reflects the multifaceted plight of black women in the world. My recent work has also touched on nature and the fragility of flora and fauna. I am heavily influenced by Japanese video games and animation, fashion and the natural world.
