The onslaught of blaring headlines, the unending demands of work, the ties of family and social duties are enough to beat anyone into retreat. But when you withdraw inside yourself, a new chaos ensues. Vertigo is the sensation of spinning inside a vortex of your own experience. Here, time is cyclical – you may shift and change, but you can never cast away from the recurring patterns of your past. Zarówny’s work develops a personal symbolism, detached from the tumult of the world but inevitably shaped by it. In a show spanning film, painting and mixed media, the artist plays on feelings of suspense and inevitability, knocking expectations off balance to create the sensation of vertigo.
