Kat Toronto's new photo + video series "Dolls in the House of Venus" toys with the cultural ideals of feminine beauty and the push and pull of dominance and submission through the act of revealing and concealing.
About
"Dolls in the House of Venus", the surreal and unsettling new photo and video series by San Francisco Bay Area native Kat Toronto (also known as her alter ego, "Miss Meatface") will premier at London's Resistance Gallery on July 21, 2016. As a multidisciplinary artist Kat's "Dolls in the House of Venus" series incorporates her performance based photography combining the classic techniques of vintage Polaroid photography and modern digital imaging and video. The series delves into a complex set of questions brought about by her confrontation with cervical cancer at 29 and focuses on her alter ego "Miss Meatface" who emerged shortly after her diagnosis in 2010. Using her own brand of performance photography and short films, Kat has set out to explore the changing roles that gender and sexuality play in the life of a young 21st century woman, the cultural ideals of feminine beauty and the push and pull of dominance and submission through the act of revealing and concealing.
