A talk for artists about best practices and pitfalls when it comes to conducting yourself professionally in your day-to-day practice. Booking required via Eventbrite.

About

Sometimes, artists get it quite wrong. What if I told you that you might be making mistakes that you are unaware of, ones that may have cost you an opportunity? And because no-one has told you about it, you’ve been repeating those mistakes over and over.

Drawing on 20 years of experiences, Amit Rai Sharma has seen a lot from the other side of the table. He will share the do's and don'ts for artists, from his own lessons learned and his observations on what is considered good and bad conduct.

Amit will share his insight from both his artist perspective; with sympathy for the creative, and balance that against his experiences of having to deal with artists from the other side; as someone who has had to interview, employ, and manage artists in a professional capacity.

He will also share the tips he gained around diplomacy and bargaining, so that artists can learn how to have a better day-to-day art practice.

about the speaker:

As a working sound artist and creative Amit Rai Sharma has collaborated extensively with artists, designers, creatives and makers across a variety of projects including gallery-based exhibitions, film, games & tech, dance, and theatre. In these projects he has managed relationships with a variety of personalities and accountability.

As lead artist at an educational charity, he has overseen the hiring of artists, trained artists on how to run workshops and how to mentor young people and worked alongside artists to deliver large scale funded projects (funded by Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery Fund, John Lyons, Wellcome Trust, Esmee Fairbairn, Cockayne Foundation) on behalf of the charity.

At TASC Amit works with artists in both a one-to-one and group capacity to help support artists as they progress through their career and uses his research background to dissect the issues relevant to working artists today.

Amit has a BA/Hons in Fine Art, and an MSc in Applied Psychology where his research delved into the motivations behind creativity; why people are compelled to do creative activity, and the value it brings them despite the hardship that is often a partner to its pursuit.
