Divine Schism Residency: 10 April
Divine Schism take up residency in the Basement, presenting a series of live gigs and performances.
The Adventures of Prince Achmed – special screening with live score composed and performed by Flights of Helios.
Oxford space-pop/shoegaze quintet Flights of Helios combine spiralling, caustic electronica with reverb-drenched post-rock guitar drones and heart-stopping vocals.
In March 2014 at Oxford’s Pitt Rivers Museum Flights of Helios took their sound on an Eastern exploratory tangent, debuting their original live score to The Adventures of Prince Achmed by Lotte Reiniger, the oldest surviving animated feature film which premiered in Germany on 23 September 1926. Following a second outing at the Ashmolean Museum in May 2014 the band are bringing this live experience to the basement at Modern Art Oxford for Divine Schism.
Opening the evening will be a discussion questioning the use and meaning behind music videos with filmmakers and artists including Oxford based Akanbe Films amongst others.
Liam Martin and Sam King are both musicians as well as filmmakers and they have recently teamed up behind the Akanbe Films moniker. “We make music videos, short-form documentary, promotional material for businesses that we believe in and anything else we feel like doing. Above all we concentrate on making films that we love, which is what motivates us.” They have worked previously with Stornoway, Dry the River, Truck Festival, Oxford Fashion Week and Nature Seychelles to name but a few. Divine Schism are very excited to have them at the gallery for this unique talk.
Doors open 7.30pm, show starts 8pm.
