New Paintings by Rebecca Meanley

About

This exhibition shows for the first time a new series of small scale paintings by Rebecca Meanley. These paintings explore new territory, drawing on the artist's actual experience, although the paintings may not convey their content in a readable state. The work may appear aesthetically pleasing but underneath there is a sinister subtext. Things are not necessarily what they seem. Paint and the process of painting are used as a vehicle to convey personal experience, visually and subliminally. Painting is entered into with a particular feeling, sensation or event in mind which is very significant to the artist. This way of using remembered experience or envisaging an overwhelming circumstance in the recent past, is manifested through paint, gesture and improvisation. Compositions are brought to the edge of recognition but avoid any absolute representation, staying within an abstract terrain. The artist uses the processes of improvisation and abstraction as instruments of veiled disguise or concealment, the undercurrent of truth held within.
