Digital representations of the body closely resemble the physical body. How do we create digital identities that reflect our authentic self?

About

Why should I attend?

Lilia Ziamou will share insights from my art practice and discuss how digital representations of the body, and therefore digital identities, can be conceived and presented as a narrative.

  • Audiences will evaluate and question how they construct their online identities.
  • Audiences will understand the challenges that are inherent in the process of creating online identities.
  • Audiences will reflect on how to express themselves online and reveal aspects of their authentic self.

About the artist

Lilia Ziamou is a multimedia artist who uses digital technologies to liberate the female body from conventional forms and meanings. She creates sculptures, public artworks, photographs, clothing and digital drawings that evoke fragmented bodies and challenge preconceptions.

Ziamou’s source fragments come from art history and her body, from anatomical models, mannequins, and her earlier sculptures. She works with materials ranging from traditional stone like marble, alabaster, and limestone to textiles of her own design. She applies 3D modeling, digital fabrication and other digital techniques to distort and manipulate the original fragments, transforming them into new entities.

Her recent work was presented in a one-person exhibition, “Body Politic,” at NYU Kimmel Galleries in 2019. Additional solo exhibitions include Elga Wimmer (NY), Tenri Gallery (NY), the John Jay College Gallery (NY), the Consulate General of Greece in New York, and Gallery 7 (Athens Greece).

Ziamou was artist in residence at the Museum of Arts and Design in 2014. She holds a BS from Aristotle University (Greece), an MPS from Tisch/NYU and a Ph.D. from the University of Rhode Island. She is a professor at the City University of New York. A native of Greece, she now lives and works in New York.
