Kate Trafeli’s methodology is rooted in instinct and concentrated isolation. The resultant paintings, in their jewel-toned relationships between buoyant and weighted form, ensnare the onlooker, tempting them to organically tread their own ‘desire lines’ through each work.
About
Born from Trafeli’s personal perspective, her paintings represent experience, memory and place. For the most part these are abstracted images. However, marks appear in the works which allude to maps, landscapes, doors, windows and bridges giving a sense of story and mystery to the works.
That elements of traversing divides suggested in Trafeli’s work seem entirely fitting given her habitation of the U.S., Italy, and London, and in the liminal nature of the themes in which the artist finds inspiration: a fleeting memory, a transition between emotions. These private themes reveal their universality when visitors, prompted by Trafeli’s work, approach the artist with recollections and stories of their own.
This is Ms. Trafeli's first solo show in London after a decade working in Italy. She is newly represented by AfterNyne Gallery, Holland Park, London. The opening event is Thursday 25 April, 2019 from 6pm to 8pm. Please RSVP gallery@afternyne.com to attend the opening. The show will run to 11 May 2019.
