About

John Cheim is best recognised as one half of New York gallery Cheim & Read. However, what is less well known is how Cheim has produced and designed a number of important artist publications over the last 30 years including ground-breaking monographs on Bruce Weber, Jack Pierson, Louise Bourgeois and Alice Neel to name a few.

This exhibition will take place in our Reading Room and aims to shed light on Cheim's extraordinary career as a book designer of note. Many who are familiar with his publications have come to admire their elegant typography and precision coupled with luscious photographic reproductions.

As a book designer Cheim is something of an unsung hero among collectors of rare artists' publications and this display aims to explore his work for the first time. In particular, his monographs Bear Pond and Bruce Weber, produced with American photographer Bruce Weber, have helped define an era.

The Fox Reading Room was made possible by the generous support of the Edwin Fox Foundation.
