Das Giftraum is pleased to welcome Der Kunst Klub, a new Berlin-based art collective, as they present their exhibition Metropolis. Taking inspiration from the rapid technological advancements of the 1920s, Metropolis creates a delusional world of corpses, crowds and constructions.
About
Created in collaboration between the visual artist Alyona Baranoff and dancer Emily May, Metropolis is Der Kunst Klub’s first exhibition, which delves into the themes of superficiality, grandeur and obscurity.
In oil, print and installation, a superficially whimsical portrait of a city forms and is enlivened by the impulsive physicality of the dancer.
Emily May has graduated from Trinity Laban Dance Conservatoire and since then contributed to magazines in Berlin and London as well as explored modern choreography under the umbrella of Emily May Dance Theatre. Emily draws inspiration from the Weimar culture and has transformed her fondness of divine decadence into an art collective Der Kunst Klub.
Born in Boston and living between Berlin and Moscow, Alyona Baranoff is a painter and filmmaker who has deep appreciation of cities’ distinct voice. Her art takes a melancholic stance as an observer of the urban whirl and looks from an impartial perspective at how people are mere pawns in large cities.
