In the exhibition Denatured, Nick Horrigan presents new sculptures exploring his interest in the interplay between synthetic and natural materials. As visitors will see, wood is always centre stage in his practice, often on a grand scale.

Nick Horrigan’s sculptures often commence with the mechanised splitting of wood into planks and shingles, or ripped and cut into beams and timbers that he reconstitutes into forms that bear little connection to their originating trees. In fact, the exhibition title’s duality refers to this dialogue between the mechanical and natural; and how the former can impact the latter in a material sense, but also beyond to infer environmental concerns. This extends to our custodianship of climate, and the need to balance carbon footprint and produce sustainability. In response, Horrigan is primarily a constructor of wooden sculptures, with the occasional structural steel, or metal fixing to join parts or a touch of acrylic to give colour and light. Whether these additions are hidden or visible, be in no doubt, wood and its grain, along with its tendency to subtly warp and move is the main actor in Horrigan’s three dimensional language.
