Demo: Daniel Lehan

About

Artist Daniel Lehan has been commissioned by East Street Arts (ESA) for UNITED to present new work exploring protest, demonstrations and marches as forms of communication, political discourse, visual and performative art and creative engagement. The first part of the commission, DEMO, involves two afternoon workshops with Lehan where participants will prepare for the second part of the commission MARCHING ON TOGETHER, a march through Leeds city centre on Sun 7 June. DEMO will involve watching film screenings and discuss issues around the subject of marching and protests as well as physically making banners, devising slogans and outfits for MARCHING ON TOGETHER.

DEMO timetable:

SATURDAY 30 MAY: (Times are approximate)
Venue: PSL (Project Space Leeds) Whitehall Waterfront, 2 Riverside Way. LS1 4EH.

2pm: Introduction to DEMO, MARCHING ON TOGETHER and Lehan's artistic practice

2.45pm: Screening of selection of YouTube videos on the theme of marching/protest

3.15pm: Discussion facilitated via research by artist Lisa Murphy on contemporary artists who use processions and banners in their work

4pm: Exercise: 6 Degrees of Separation ' find out how you link to the other DEMO participants!

4.45pm: OPEN LETTER - Lehan will ask DEMO participants to develop an 'open letter' to London based creative practitioners for his publication A3.

5.45pm: Introduction to Sunday DEMO workshop / best slogan competition / Design of Artists' Uniform etc

SUNDAY 31 MAY: (Times are approximate)

2pm: Introduction to DEMO and MARCHING ON TOGETHER, review of ideas and thoughts from Saturday's workshop

2.30pm: Exercise: Leeds Map Making on Thinking Wall

3.30pm onwards:
- Discussion planning of route / style / format of MARCHING ON TOGETHER /
- Making Activities: Badges, t'shirt printing, banners, slogans, design of Artists' Uniform
- Design of handouts to promote MARCHING ON TOGETHER / Nous Vous branding of these items

Continuous activities throughout the day:

Contributing to Leeds Map making
Screening of You Tube videos
Refreshments and snacks

MARCHING ON TOGETHER will see the activity that happens during the two DEMO workshops culminate in the march around Leeds City Centre on Sun 7 June, 12-2pm ' ALL WELCOME!
