DELVE

About

DELVE is an exhibition that interrogates and rethinks the nature of artistic research. Approaching the exhibition as a process and focusing on the research-based practice of the artist and in turn the practice-based research of the curator, students from the RCA's Curating Contemporary Art MA programme seek to address the discourse around this field. Considering it as an integral part of the making process, both Duffy and Stevens will present new works, partially based on revisiting strands of research from previous projects. Duffy shows elements of her on-going project Come On In, bringing together research as diverse as ventriloquism, cave diving and Marilyn Monroe. Stevens will present a new work, Almost Touching, drawn out of research undertaken in and about the city of Odessa, the basis for her previous solo show at the Acme Project Space, Black Sea. As part of the display at Acme Project Space the team of curators consider what material and immaterial objects are observed by the artists to constitute their research. Generated through exchange between curators and artists, DELVE presents the resulting references and sources as an installation within the gallery. To address how research is often shaped through the social process of speaking to peers and friends, the artists and curators conducted site visits together prior to the exhibition, and the documentation of this forms part of the display. By formalising the exchange that takes place between artists and curators, DELVE aims to interrogate how artists and curators conduct research and its relationship to practice which will be explored further in a closing event with performances and discussions from 3pm on Sunday 25 May. What is unique about artistic research? Working intimately with two Acme residency artists, Sarah Duffy and Maaike Anne Stevens, the team of five curators have adopted a methodological approach to this proposition. Developed through a series of conversations with the artists, the exhibition concept looks at three core principles of what research is and how it is conducted: through making, through social interaction and through observation. The project is a collaboration between the Curating Contemporary Art Programme at the Royal College of Art and the Acme Studios Residency Programme. http://cca.rca.ac.uk http://www.acme.org.uk
